A shaggy dog story wins Oz Lit award

Another day and another book prize - this time a book about a missing dog wins a book prize in Australia according The Age newspaper.

When Michelle de Kretser’s dog went missing in the Gippsland bush for 13 days a few years ago, she didn’t see the trauma as potential material for fiction. “Then, as time recedes, I guess you start to see a fictional shape to it.”

Last night the novel that grew out of that experience won the fiction prize in the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards. The Lost Dog, which is dedicated to her peripatetic pooch, Gus, was also named book of the year.
