Netherland - Joseph O’Neill on New York cricket
Joseph O’Neill - author of Netherland - is interviewed in The Sunday Times. Netherland - a post-9/11 novel concerning cricket in New York - got a glowing review from Dwight Garner in the New York Times three weeks ago. The review stuck in my mind because I didn’t expect to see the New York Times talking about cricket….in its book section or its sports section.
“Over the past five years, people would ask me, ‘What are you doing?’ I’d reply, ‘It’s a novel set in the world of New York cricket.’ They’d recoil slightly and you could almost hear them thinking, ‘Oh dear, poor fellow, he’s lost it.’”
