Thirty-three year old Aravind Adiga has beaten out Amitav Ghosh, Steve Toltz, Linda Grant, Philip Hensher and the favourite Sebastian Barry to win the £50,000 Man Booker prize.
The White Tiger, a tale of two India’s, tells the story of Balram, the son of a rickshaw puller in the heartlands, one of the “faceless” poor left behind by the country’s recent economic boom. The novel was described by one of the judges by saying that “In many ways it was the perfect novel.”
