Being a redheaded Canadian girl, I fell in love with Anne Shirley immediately upon my first reading of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables. The writing was so funny, forgiving of her characters’ foibles, and so accessible, even to a child, without resorting to condescension or dumbing-down of the writing. I treasured my copy, and still have it, battered, somewhere, along with Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island. I read those three repeatedly. Green Gables felt like home. I can’t to this day read about Matthew’s death without blubbing like an idiot.
I never wondered, as a child, about Lucy Maud Montgomery herself. But as an adult interested in writing, in books, and in what goes into them, I do. And apparently I’m not alone – Mary Henley Rubio has written Lucy Maud Montgomery: A Gift of Wings, a biography of Montgomery, after researching her life for over two decades.
