Handwritten 18th century medical book up for auction

A hand-written book containing bizarre 18th century medical remedies including pike bones and dragon’s blood is to be auctioned, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Here is the book’s cure for anyone is having problems with their piles…..

“Take a great onion core it and fill it with b[utter] or oyle and roll it in embers until it is soft. Then binde it to the place.”

Now…is that hot or cold embers?

(Years ago, I remember an EastEnders character slipping in a crafty and funny reference to piles in the middle of a conversation about something or other. She said: “Ohh, me Farmers are killing me.” Rhyming slang of course…..Farmers – Farmer Giles – piles.)
