A book called Terminator and Philosophy….

Terminator & Philosophy….And the subtitle is ‘I’ll Be Back, Therefore I Am.’ Sounds like the whole Pride and Predator thing once again.

Terminator and Philosophy is part of a series of more than a dozen paperbacks in which lowbrow pop culture meets highbrow academia. The book is due in May, just as Terminator Salvation hits theaters.

“We like to say the books are about smart popular culture for smart fans,” says series editor William Irwin, 38. The series began in 2006. In each title, American and foreign academics write essays that use the philosophies of heavy hitters such as Nietzsche and Plato to answer the big questions raised by movies, TV shows, rock bands and video games.

Thankfully, I did film studies in the late 1980s while studying for my useless arts degree. I can tell you Terminator is one of the classic post-modern movies of the 1980s. It takes the traditional beginning, middle and end narrative and turns it on its head. I haven’t the foggiest clue what philosophy learnings can be drawn from this movie. I wonder if it’s possible to come back from the future in order to stop a former bodybuilder from becoming Governor of California?
