A report in the UK says 20 million Britons from the ‘C2DE socio-economic group’ are alienated and intimidated by books. As Dudley Moore would have explained, the C2DEs are the ‘bloody working class.’
Odd - it says the working class won’t/can’t read yet the British publishing industry is very keen on publishing books about and by celebrities, which dominate the tabloids and primetime TV - produced to be consumed by the working class. Just look at the tasteless rush to get Jade Goody books into the shops at the moment. Are the AB socio-economic group going to buy books about Jade Goody? Any mainstream bookshop in the UK will have books by Jamie Oliver, John Grisham and Russell Brand in the window. Hardly intimidating stuff - this report might be somewhat flawed.
