The Obamas’ rare song book gift to the Queen

You can’t fault Barack and Michelle Obama. They certainly did their homework on what to give to the Queen. Never mind the iPod loaded up with Barack’s speeches (I’m sure she’ll wipe them off and load up some Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst) but the gift of a rare song book from 1951 is interesting.

It’s a pretty scarce Rodgers and Hart Song Book that contains words and music of 47 songs composed by Richard Rodgers and the lyricist Lorenz Hart from 22 shows and two films. The Daily Telegraph reports the Queen is a huge fan of Rodgers and Hammerstein and has been since 1947 – years before either of the Obamas were even a twinkle in the eyes of their parents.

On August 4, 1947 (the 47th birthday of then Queen Elizabeth – later the Queen Mother), King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth, Princess Margaret and Lt. Philip Mountbatten went to see the new hit musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! — and the engaged couple (Princess Elizabeth and Lt. Philip Mountbatten) particularly liked the song People will say we’re in love. They would request the song when attending dances.

If you met the Queen, what book would you give to her?

I’ve always wondered if the Queen is aware of the children’s book called The Queen’s Knickers. The book goes into details about all the types of underwear owned by the Queen and how she worries about what knickers to wear when she goes on a Royal visit. Both my kids have always enjoyed it.
