Chinua Achebe, the iconic African writer who gave us Things Fall Apart, writes very slowly and he’s very happy to write very slowly. This month sees the publication of The Education of a British-Protected Child - a collection of essays linking his literary career. It’s been 20 years since his last book.
I have recently read this incredible book, and wonder why it is not part of required reading for American History. It shows so much more than history textbook accounts with regard to slavery. the impact of colonists upon another culture, and told from Okonkwo’s (the main character)perspective.
I am in a leadership course, and this was part of our required reading, but one that has won a plac einmy permanent personal library.
The article overlooks the fact that he published Home and Exile in 2000, Collected Poems in 2004 and before that Another Africa in 1998. I think the publishing world loves that whole Achebe/Salinger/Pynchon “recluse, or when will they publish again sales pitch” Love it!!!
I just read the book, very good. Every aspect of the book was entertaining.
