Searching for Gregynog: Welsh private press books
Everyday, a good number of customers come to AbeBooks and search for the term “Gregynog.” To most people, this is simply a very difficult word to pronounce. In reality, these people (we should really say collectors) are looking for rare limited edition books published by the Gregynog Press, also known as Gwasg Gregynog.
Originally founded in 1922, this famed private press was named after Gregynog Hall – a lovely black and white stately home near Newtown in Wales. Today, Gwasg Gregynog is a charity and remains a very active part of Welsh cultural life.
The Gwasg Gregynog website informs us that…
The Press was commissioned to produce the inaugural document for the opening of the National Assembly for Wales in 1999. In celebration of this occasion, the first instrument of Welsh government for more than 600 years, a 250 limited edition souvenir volume was printed on Zerkall mould-made paper, hand-bound into cloth-covered boards and blocked in gold. In 2006 the Press bound the calligraphed poem commissioned to open the Assembly’s permanent home, Y Senedd, in Cardiff.
You need a pretty penny or two to collect the early publications.
