Real Beach Reads: Books About Beaches

jones-beachNo doubt you will already have been deluged by summer reading lists telling you what to read at the beach. But once you have seen one or two, then you have seen them all. Why not read books that are actually about beaches? Photography books illustrate the views, the people and even the architecture. History books recount the seaside communities and the bloody battles fought on beaches. There are books about the surfers, the life guards, the flotsam and jetsam, the sand and the shells, the shipwrecks, the sand castles and the boardwalks and piers.

From Bondi to Bournemouth, Miami to Los Angeles and from Hawaii to Normandy, enjoy our real beach reads.

Terrific list! I don’t think I’ve read any of them and when I’m at the beach, I like to read something that ties me to the sand I’m sitting on. I highly recommend How To Read a North Carolina Beach, by Orrin Pilkey, a marine geologist who is a personable writer.
