Meet the bookstore cats
I have been in this job for nearly six years. If there is one thing I know about used bookshops, it’s there is usually a resident cat sitting alongside the bookshelves. Earlier this year, we asked some of our booksellers to send in pictures of their bookshop cats and explain how they came to own a literary feline.
Our gallery of bookstore cats (by the way, we are calling them a ‘catalog’ of bookshop cats) features Nietzsche from The Book Man in British Columbia, Maggie from Blue Jacket Books in Ohio, Zola from The Iliad Bookshop in California, Kiki from BookMarx Books in Ohio, Cotton from Vintage Books in Arkansas, Booker from The Book Nook of Mexico in Missouri, Shakespeare and Rembrandt from Never Without A Book in Alberta, and Gwenievere from Already Read Used Books in Virginia.
Some of these cats have had a hard time and been plucked from animal rescue shelters. Poor old Zola, who only has one eye, was terribly mistreated but the good folks at the Iliad Bookshop have provided a wonderful home for this cat.
Nietzsche is very beautiful and noble, while Kiki looks like the classic playful cat. But frankly, they are all great.
