The rare and controversial Trowenna Sea
AbeBooks was mentioned in today’s New Zealand Herald while discussing the escalating prices for remaining copies of Witi Ihimaera’s controversial, and now rare, 2009 historical fiction novel The Trowenna Sea.
The book was originally published in New Zealand in 2009, but was removed from public sale after Ihimaera was accused of Plagiarising from several historians. Ihimaera then apologized, explaining that any omissions were simply in error and were not meant to be malicious, and it seemed as though Penguin would publish the novel in an amended state.
The saga continued last September when Penguin announced that it would no longer re-publish the novel, leaving fans with just a few original copies that escaped during the first sale.
AbeBooks currently has the cheapest copy of the book online, that I could find, at $250 but as The New Zealand Herald states one ambitious Australian seller has ten copies of the book that he’s looking to unload on eBay for $300,000.
