Nibbles and Me by Elizabeth Taylor

nibbles-and-meNot many people are aware that Elizabeth Taylor, who died earlier today, published a book in 1946 called Nibbles and Me. Oddly, this book has become rather collectible over the years.

Nibbles was her pet chipmunk. She wrote the book when she was just 13 but already a huge Hollywood star thanks to Lassie Come Home and National Velvet. She discovered Nibbles while filming Courage of Lassie in the Pacific Northwest. The book includes sketches by the young Elizabeth and tales recounting the mischief of the chipmunk. The breadth of Taylor’s career is a little difficult to grasp – she was famous by the age of 11 and the fame never went away.

I read this book and fell in love with Elizabeth Taylor in 1947, when I was 10, and the passion never died…and won’t..ever.

I think it looks like a great book. No-one writes about chipmunks these days.

  3. My older sister had this book and so I read it from an early alge in the late 40′s-early 60′s. It was a favorite both for the idea of having a pet chipmunk and the pictures from her movies that are in it.

  4. I had never heard of this book till i watched Elizabeth Taylor biography last night. I too am an animal lover and have a “pet” chipmunk, named Mr. Mann. He doesn’t stay in my house but lives outside. Come Spring he runs around my yard, follows me when I am gardening and sits on my feet to eat his peanuts. I cannot wait to get a copy of this book as I did not read it as a child. Hope Elizabeth and Nibbles are having a happy reunion!

  5. I read this book when I was 7 years old in England. Elizabeth was 14. She was and always has been my favourite. I was so inspired that I attempted to write a book myself “Cheeky and Me” about my very bad behaved mongrel dog!

  6. I have a signed copy of the book which was given to my grandfather because he is Ed in the book. She loved my grandad. She spent summers at his resort along with my mother. her uncle Howard young was a dear friend of our family
