Paying for It by Chester Brown
The book with the biggest buzz right now is Paying For It by Chester Brown – a graphic novel about one man and his ‘use’ of prostitutes. I’m hearing about this book everywhere and, to be frank, there’s a lot more media attention to come.
In 1996 Brown – a well known Canadian cartoonist – breaks up with his girlfriend. After three years without sex, he visits a prostitute and…. well… unburdens himself. The rest of the book lists his meetings with Toronto’s ladies of the night. Apparently, it’s explicit but not erotic. And yes, there are developments aside from the list of financial transactions.
Canada’s Globe and Mail interviewed Chester Brown a few days ago. I’m sure someone will complain about the book but most people seem intrigued to see how this story about the world’s oldest profession is treated in the graphic novel format.
