What do we need to say? These vintage paperbacks from Penguin speak for themselves. Those simple color-coded designs still catch the eye decades after the books were published.
No bookshelf is complete without a little orange, green, dark blue, purple, yellow.
All The Colors of Penguin’s Rainbow
I recommend Penguin By Design, by Phil Barnes, which traces the development of the Alan Lane aesthetic. My far-sighted eyes struggle with the small print, and my older Penguins have disintegrated anyway, but I’ve just discovered you can buy a large set of postcard representations of these covers, so I’m bringing the rainbow back to my study that way.
