Battle over ‘Keep calm and carry on’

‘Keep calm and carry on’ is a worthy motto. The Telegraph reports on Barter Books’ battle over the rights to merchandise goods carrying this wartime slogan.

Barter Books, in the UK, is a long-time AbeBooks bookseller and owns one of only two surviving wartime originals of this famous poster. Do visit their bookshop in Alnwick, Northumberland, if you ever get the chance.

  1. Barter Books is the the nicest bookshop in the world. I would happily live there: it’s a converted beautiful railway station, it has a lovely tearoom, it has battered, comfy old sofas by a roaring fireplace. And it’s in beautiful Alnwick.

I knew they’d found the prototype poster that has no become ubiquitous but I didn’t realise they were getting no royalties at all for its use.

This slogan is splashed over all sorts of things sold at chain shops (including chain bookshops). It would be such a kick in the teeth for Barter if places they already have to struggle to compete with make profit out of something Barter discovered, while the latter makes none!
