Lassie Come Home – the 1940 first edition
For the weekend, I have something for dog lovers and can offer the first edition of Eric Knight’s Lassie Come Home from 1940. This copy above is lacking the dust jacket like so many books from more than 70 years ago. The John C Winston Company published the novel and Marguerite Kirmse was the illustrator. You can see the original dust jacket on the right.
Lassie first appeared in a story in the Saturday Evening Post before Knight wrote the full novel. You know the story. Lassie, a family’s prize dog, is sold to a wealthy family when hard times affect her original owners. Transported hundreds of miles away, the faithful dog starts for home.
Roddy McDowall starred as the boy Joe Carraclough in the famous 1943 movie of the book.
Born in Yorkshire and much traveled, the versatile Knight set a number of his novels in England.
