Found in Books: $20,000.
You may remember a few years back we did a feature about Things Found in Books. The surprising list includes such gems as a strip of bacon (expired), a cockroach (also expired), a rookie Mickey Mantle baseball card, a selection of 1970s porn, cash, dried flowers and much more.
But this takes the cake (for me personally) in terms of biggest cash find. A Brazilian immigrant in Wellesley found over $20,000 in cash in a used book. He is trying to track down the rightful owner, but without a name, that could prove extremely difficult to do. He says if he can’t find who the money should belong to, he will likely give some to charity and keep the rest.
I remember once as a child finding a cat and trying to locate its owner….and then being bitterly disappointed when I did. I imagine this is somewhat an extension of that feeling.

A friend and I found a massive collection of four-leaf clovers pressed in first edition Nancy Drews in her attic when we were kids. Alas, they disintegrated immediately. I found a circa 1920s baby picture in an old edition of Robinson Crusoe, but mostly I find old bookmarks and receipts, so many receipts, especially from bodegas. What’s up with that?

I have no idea what’s up with the receipts really, ALM – but I do know that I tend to use them as bookmarks too. I guess it’s just a handy bit of paper, always around, that you’re likely to not need again.
