The 4th Annual Galiano Literary Festival: Feb 22-24
Galiano Island is nestled in the Strait of Georgia almost halfway between Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia. It’s a small rural island which is a popular tourist attraction for its beautiful views, fantastic bird watching, ocean wildlife, and the Galiano Literary Festival – set to be held February 22-24, 2013.
The festival was designed with readers in mind and the organizers strive to create an intimate and interactive environment for participants, where they can chat with their favourite writers over coffee and muffins in the morning, have their books signed after a reading, or sit next to them at the Authors’ Dinner and talk. Writers sit in and participate in each other’s events and have lots of time to interact with attendees.
The festival is the brainchild of Lee Trentadue and Jim Schmidt who, with the help of four part-time staff members, began to plan this annual festival as a way to connect with readers and authors while promoting their bookshop – Galiano Island Books. “I felt that venues for authors to engage with readers were becoming fewer, as the industry was going through massive changes,” explains Trentadue “I felt that a festival would be a great way to bring authors to our community and this would also expand the way that our bookstore could provide an exciting venue for author readings and writing workshops. I also felt that this would be a great way to bring people to our island during the off-season, to help showcase our beautiful island and the lifestyle here.”
The Galiano Literary Festival includes a wide variety of authors including Bill Gaston, Nancy Richler, Billie Livingston, and Mark Leiren-Young. If you are interested in hobnobbing about Galiano Island with eagles, whales and these fantastic authors you can find registration information on the festival website; Tickets start at $20 for a single event up to $150 for a full festival pass and all tickets include admission to the Friday Welcome Evening Reception.
