25 of the Best Love Stories

Love, you slippery beast, what are you? How can we speak about you when you refuse to be adequately defined? What do we talk about, when we talk about love?

Take a break from the cloying sappiness of drugstore rhyme with these books that come close to speaking from the heart.

  1. I recommend Happy All the Time, by Laurie Colwin, a funny, smart novel that for me comes the closest by far of any late 20th century American work to capturing Jane Austen-like magic. I’d also toss in Nancy Mitford’s The Pursuit of Love. And, I can’t think of the author’s name, but Farm Fatale is a riot, satirizing contemporary British material culture and romantic misadventures.
