Richard Matheson passes away

The world lost another great writer this week when science fiction legend Richard MathesonI Am Legend by Richard Matheson passed away in Los Angeles on Sunday. Matheson, will be best remembered for his 1954 book I Am Legend; the novel helped popularize both the post-apocalyptic fiction genre as well as the zombie genre of horror.

His work spanned the fantasy, horror, and science fiction genres where he influenced everyone from Stephen King and Anne Rice to filmmaker George A. Romero.  His career spanned more than 60 years and for his work he had been given lifetime achievement designation by the World Fantasy Convention and the Horror Writers Association as well as being inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2010.

Matheson’s other contributions to the genres include novels The Shrinking Man, A Stir of Echoes, and Hell House (which were all turned into major motion pictures), innumerable short stories, and  he also wrote for a number of television shows including many episodes of The Twilight Zone.

He was 87, and he will be missed.
