Jose Torres: boxer and author

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

I heard about the death of boxer Jose Torres at the weekend but I didn’t know he was also an author until today. The 72-year-old Torres was a former light heavyweight world champion and Olympic silver medalist.

Early in his pro career, according to The New York Times, Mr. Torres became friendly with writers and began writing a column in the New York Post, often on Hispanic community affairs.

He also wrote two biographies, “Sting Like a Bee” on Muhammad Ali and “Fire and Fear” on Mike Tyson. Norman Mailer wrote the preface to the biography of Ali. They remained friends, and as late as 1984, Mr. Torres was regularly sparring three rounds on Saturdays with Mailer, who was 61.

F Scott Fitzgerald Movie

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

News reports this morning claim that actress Keira Knightley is in negotiations to play the role of Zelda Fitzgerald, the wife of legendary Jazz Age author F. Scott Fitzgerald. The role would be in an upcoming film scheduled to begin shooting next April as a biopic about the life and times of the famous author. F. Scott Fitzgerald is best known for the classic novels The Great Gatsby and Tender is the Night. Ironically, the news comes on the same day that Fitzgerald was born in 1896. No news yet on which actor will be playing F. Scott Fitzgerald himself, an author rumoured to have suffered through fits of alcoholism and jealousy.
