Join Barack Obama’s book club

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

This morning NPR listeners will have heard an item about Barack Obama’s love of books. It was short and sweet, and if you want to learn more about the books that the president-elect reads then you should check out this feature. I’ve attempted to list every book that Obama has spoken about or been seen carrying over the past 12 months.

In October, the New York Times asked Obama to provide a list of books and writers that were significant to him. Here goes – Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thomas Jefferson, Mark Twain, Abraham Lincoln, James Baldwin, W. E. B. DuBois’ Souls of Black Folk, Martin Luther King’s Letter From Birmingham Jail, Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon, Graham Greene’s The Power and the Glory and The Quiet American, Doris Lessing’s The Golden Notebook, Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s Cancer Ward, John Steinbeck’s In Dubious Battle, Robert Caro’s Power Broker, Studs Terkel’s Working, Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations and Theory of Moral Sentiments, and also Robert Penn’s All the King’s Men – a novel about a corrupt Southern governor (Rod Blagojevich anyone?). And then there were his theology and philosophy influences - Friedrich Nietzsche, Reinhold Niebuhr and Paul Tillich.

I am not a fan of George Bush but I do feel a little sorry for him. Obama’s love of reading has earned him massive positive publicity over the past 12 months yet Bush is probably just as much of an avid reader. Karl Rove, Bush’s Deputy Chief of Staff from 2004 until 2007, said his boss read 95 books in 2006 and another 51 in 2007. Bush is even married to a librarian but all these literary facts are not going to help change his legacy.

Barack Obama’s reading a Lincoln biography

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

The latest pick in the Barack Obama book club is Lincoln: The Biography of a Writer by Fred Kaplan. The President-elect was photographed leaving the Chicago home of friend Penny Pritzker after having dinner last Saturday. Barack’s getting in his Lincoln reading early - next February is the 200th anniversary of his birth and there are going to be dozens of Abe books on the market.

Obama reads Fareed Zakaria’s Post American World

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Politics are on the mind of everyone in North America at the moment. We are in the midst of a financial crisis that at least matches the recessions of the 1980s (or possibly the 1930s) and elections in both Canada and the US. So it not surprising to find out one of the most searched for and bestselling books is Fareed Zakaria’s Post American World.

A few months back Barack Obama was seen reading a copy of the book and now it is being touted by foreign affairs analysts as the wake up call that America should take heed to.

This article in the Seattle Times echo’s the sentiment of the books first line:

How could this be? The United States remains the singular world power, even with a battered and bruised economy. No other country is a match for this nation’s military might. Turns out the resounding global chorus is, “So what?”

Sens. Obama and McCain are receiving this sober assessment from an equally sober source, Thomas Fingar, the top analyst in the U.S. intelligence community. His report, “Global Trends 2025,” argues the erosion of U.S. leadership in political, economic and even cultural areas is accelerating.

Fingar, who will brief the new president, shared his findings with an organization of intelligence analysts last month, and The Washington Post covered his speech. His talk echoed a book that is a must-read, “The Post-American World,” by Fareed Zakaria. The first sentence in the slim but powerful volume sets the tone: “This is not a book about the decline of America, but rather about the rise of everyone else.”

Wondering what else Barack Obama is reading? We were, too.
