Signed and dated by Edward H. Ripley on front and rear endpapers. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Minor rubbing to edges, spine label with small chip to upper corner not affecting text. Interior with former owner bookplate (Robert Sommerfield / Peoria Ill); Title page with small split, still solid; lacks errata slip; else pages are clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The First Vermont Brigade, or "Old Brigade" , served in the Union Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. They were engaged in most of the major engagements in the Eastern Theater. It suffered the highest casualty count of any brigade in the history of the United States Army, with some 1,172 killed in action. The author enlisted with the 11th Vermont Infantry (later redesignated 1st Regiment of Heavy Artillery) for service in the Civil War. Walker was promoted through the ranks to become a lieutenant colonel before he was mustered out in June 1865. This book, published in 1869 describes his experience in the war. From the Preface: These Reports, in addition to the marvelously exact regimental rosters just mentioned, contain also official reports of most of the actions in which Vermont troops were engaged, furnished by the various commanding officers, and a clear, though concise, history of their operations during each year, prepared. Signed by Bvt. Brigadier General Edward H. Ripley, who left college to enlist in the 9th Vermont Infantry in May 1862. He attained the rank of sergeant, and then was commissioned as a captain and appointed to command the regiment's Company B, which he led during action in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign in the summer of 1862, including the Siege of Suffolk, Virginia. He received promotion to major that summer. Thru the war, Ripley was wounded twice, and eventually commanded the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, XXIV Corps, which was assigned to lead the Union troops into Richmond after the Confederate surrender. Ripley's brother, William Y.H. Ripley, was Lt.Col. of the1st US Sharpshooters and awarded the Medal of Honor. This is a very attractive book with a nice war-time connection and fine Ripley family association.
