Cover design duplicates the title page (or cover) of the original edition. Hozial Baker came overland with a handful of other travellers to California at the age of 70. His diary of the journey begins in St. Joseph, Missouri on March 29, 1859 and reaches its apex at Placerville, California on Dec. 31 of the year. The rest of the trip was largely by steamer (Sacramento to San Francisco, the SF to home in Seneca, NY by ship. (Howes B49 for the original edition, noting only 4 copies known to exist). A fine copy, entirely clean and unworn in dakened plain paper jacket.
