First Edition
Octavo, pp. [1-5] 6 [7-9] 10-282 [283-286: ads], ten inserted plates, original pictorial blue cloth, front panel stamped in black, white and gold, spine panel stamped in white and gold. First edition. An unauthorized publication of short fiction and literary sketches, most previously published in AN AULD LICHT MANSE and A TILLYLOSS SCANDAL. According to Cutler, the paperbound issue of this book was published on 25 April 1893 and the "original sheets were used" for this ( later?) bind-up in blue cloth. The title pages of both paperbound and clothbound issues give the publisher's address as "5 and 7 East Sixteenth Street." There are several variants of the cloth bound copies; here the cloth is not beveled and a much reduced example of the frontispiece illustration is pasted on the front cover. Includes "The Family Honor," a Gothic tale about a human monstrosity chained up by his family in their castle's dungeon, who gets loose and crashes a ball upstairs. Cutler 36. Early owner's signature dated 1893 on front free endpaper. Touch of wear to spine ends and corner tips, a few scuffs to the rear cover, but a bright, very good copy. (#109551).

A ghost story with sexual undertones. "Very thick in dialect, unpleasant characterizations, thin interpretation, but entertaining." - Bleiler (1983). This is the first publication of the story as a book, part of "The Uniform Edition of the Works of J. M. Barrie." Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Barrie, J(ames) M(athew). MARGARET OGILVY. London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1896. First Edition. A VERY GOOD (or better) copy in original publisher's blue buckram. The boards are lightly abraded else this would be a fine copy as it has been only lightly handled and the gilt is still blazing bright. Barrie's charming tales of life in rural Scotland as inspired by his mother's recollections, written just five years before the first appearance of PETER PAN. Housed in an attractive quarter morocco slipcase.

No Binding. Condition: Fine. First Edition. Barrie, J(ames) M(attthew). WALKER, LONDON. A Farcical Comedy in Three Acts. London: Samuel French, (1907}. Frontispiece. In original publisher's wrappers, an exceedingly fine copy of this rare and fragile publication, very square and firm and without blemish save for a crease in the spine's paper covering most likely caused by the printing process which has resulted in a thin two-inch exposed seam. WALKER, LONDON was Barrie's first play, originally staged in 1892 but here published for the very first time. Barrie also met his wife Mary Ansell thanks to WALKER, LONDON as she was the actress who starred in the original production; her name is on the cast list found in this volume. Barrie's better known later plays included such masterpieces as QUALITY STREET, THE ADMIRABLE CRICHTON, and of course PETER PAN. Very tight copy, most likely unread; one is unlikely to find a better example. Housed in a beautiful quarter-morocco slipcase.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Barrie, J[ames[. M[atthew]. AULD LICHT IDYLLS. London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1888. First Edition. A NEAR FINE copy with spine gilt which looks almost as new but with some minor abrasions (as almost always) to the blue buckram boards. A nice, fresh example of the author's first novel, written 14 years before he achieved literary immortality with the creation of Peter Pan. This book's sentimental visitation of Scottish eccentricity (the Auld Lichts were a strict religious sect to which Barrie's father belonged) and Scottish lore and locale made him an instant success. Complete with 2pp. of ads, upon which a previous owner has penciled its timely date of acquisition: Oct. 1929. Housed in a tidy quarter-morocco slipcase.
