Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good ++. B/W Photographs (illustrator). First Thus. SUBTITLED : ` Women, Work, and Welfare in a Reservation Community '. 154 pages including INDEX with a few (archival) b/w photographs. In 1951 the U.S. government built the garrison Dam. That necessitated the grouping together on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation if three vaguely related American Indian groups - the Hidatsa, the Arikara and the Mandans. Today they are referred to by the term Three Affiliated Tribes. The social fabric of both the traditional (and the new) community was held together by the women. The author has interviewed (on multiple occasions) several dozens of women as to their on-reservation roles - both formal and informal. Learn more about : ceremonial giving, Josie Chase, beadwork, Four Bears Casino, Bismarck North Dakota, kinship, focalwomen, HUD housing, and Red Buttes School. Text accompanied by one reservation map. Cond : Paper wrapper is green, rust, and white. Front cover graphic is a 1930's photograph of women (and dogs) lined up outside a trading post. Volume is tight, bright, square and clean. First pages of introduction have been hi-lighted. No other marks. No tears. Excellent reading copy ! Quote (p. 87) : " Women are not so worried about who gets the credit. They're more concerned about getting the job done - especially with our families._._.The more people who are included, the stronger ._._._. ." Size: 8vo.
