One of the most important books produced by the Federal Art Project. In several hundred black & white illustrations, we see maquettes for murals and sculpture by contemporary American artists that were later installed in federal buildings, primarily post offices. Also of interest are the architectural drawings of floor plans and wall elevations showing how each work of art would be installed. Although entitled Volume I, subsequent volumes were never produced.

Hardcover. First Edition. Very good in 1/4 dark blue cloth and a second, slightly lighter color blue cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spine and on the front board. An oblong small quarto measuring 10 1/2" by 13 1/2" with the cloth worn through at the head and heel of the spine and at the tips of the boards. The joints and hinges remain strong and tight. The contents are clean and free of any damage. Laid-in at the front of the book is a single sheet of printed paper listing comments from eleven customers who have provided very positive reviews of the book. 309 pages of text and illustrated extensively with line drawings and black and white photographs The majority of the murals depicted in this volume are from post offices constructed during the Depression years. Despite this title containing "Volume I" there is no indication in public records of any subsequent volume issued by these authors on this topic.
