Staples have been professionally removed and binding now stitched and glued into wrappers. Some mild foxing and occasional dampstaining and soiling. Otherwise clean internally. Very good. A chief deputy of Josiah Gorgas, the Confederacy's brilliant Chief of Ordnance, Caleb Huse was a soldier and purchasing agent responsible for procuring arms for the Confederate army in Europe during the Civil War. Born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in 1831, Huse attended the United States Military Academy, graduating seventh in his class in 1851. He was assigned to West Point as an assistant professor of chemistry, mineralogy, and geology from 1852-59, serving under Superintendent Robert E. Lee. During a trip to Europe on extended leave in 1859 and 1860, Huse developed contacts that would later prove invaluable to the Confederacy. Upon his return, he accepted a position as professor of chemistry and commandant of cadets at the University of Alabama, where he was charged with restoring discipline among the students. In February 1861, rather than be transferred to Washington, D.C., Huse resigned his United States Army commission. Though a northerner by birth, Huse had close relationships with many southerners, including Robert E. Lee, and had also married into a Southern family. It was no surprise then that in April of 1861, Huse was commissioned a captain (and later made a major) in the Confederate army, tasked with purchasing arms and military supplies in Europe. After visiting Huse at his home in the summer of 1903 and listening to him recount stories from his past, two of his friends, believing that these stories "should be preserved," urged him to write them down. The result was the present account, published in 1904. Huse describes how in Europe he managed to acquire large quantities of firearms, cannon, and other supplies for the Confederacy in exchange for cotton, smuggled by steamboat across Federal blockades to ports in Nassau, Bermuda, and Havana. "During the first two years," writes Huse, "the captures were so infrequent that, it may be safely stated, never before was a Government at war so well supplied with arms, munitions, clothing and medicines - everything, in short, that an army requires - with so little money as was paid by the Confederacy." He goes on to recall with pride his successful bid to secure a contract for 100,000 Austrian rifles. Huse died the year after the publication of this memoir. "A meager but lively description of Confederate purchasing operations in Europe by a Southern agent" - Nevins. "The arms and other supplies Huse sent back through the blockade were crucial to Confederate survival during the war's first year" - McPherson. An interesting account of one of the lesser-known aspects of the American Civil War. HOWES H837. NEVINS I, p.257. NICHOLSON, p.401. DORNBUSCH III: 900. DAB IX, pp.428-9. ANB 11, pp.575-6. James M. McPherson, Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era (New York, 1988), p.320.

First edition. Octavo. Frontispiece portrait, 36 pp. plus full page facsimile of a Huse holographic report. Publisher's gray printed wrappers. Faint old crease, staples with some rust but overall an excellent copy.Caleb Huse (1831?1905) was a major in the Confederate States Army, acting primarily as an arms procurement agent and purchasing specialist during the American Civil War. He is most well known for his successful acquisition of weapons contracts with various European nations including the United Kingdom, Austria, and to a lesser extent, France, Prussia, and Bohemia. A majority of the weapons imported to the Confederacy from foreign powers during the war were negotiated for and purchased by Huse.
