There is a bookplate with the previous owners name on it on the inside of the front board. The pages are foxed and marked but the text is not affected. Rough cut pages. Externally worn. The spine and parts of the boards are sunned. The left hand bottom corner of the back board is creased because of a patch of water damage in the same place internally. Both the boards and spine are marked. 9x6.

A new edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding. Loosely inserted are two newspaper articles; one concerning the publisher, the other concerning Alexander Carlyle, whose nickname was Jupiter Carlyle due to his ruddy complexion. Alexander Carlyle (1722-1805) was a Scottish church leader who served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland between 1770 and 1771. This autobiography, edited by John Hill Burton, provides an interesting insight into the social and ecclesiastical history of Scotland in the 18th century, though it does not extend beyond the year 1770. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally very smart, with very light shelf wear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. book.
