Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. The cover has green cloth with goldtone letters. 343 pages; 26 chapters; b/w photos on plates. The cover's grade is good. The front boards have mottled fading, up to 2 in. width on and along the front edges and onto the cloth's turnovers. This damage to the cloth was probably caused by dampness. The remainder of the book's grade is very good. The front endpaper has 3 stains, up to 1/4 in. The back pastedown has a 1/8 in. stain. The top end of the text block is gray; the other two ends have darkened. The DJ is in 3 pieces:Front panel and flap are together. Back panel and flap are together. The spine strip had darkened; nearly half of the top end is missing; the bottom, 2 1/4 in., is loose and has a 1 in. x 3/4 in. chip. The back panel has 4 chips, up to 1/2 in., and an L-shaped closed tear and crease lines are along the bottom edge. The front panel has a 1/16 in. hole, and small, light stains are along the top edge. Rare/unique BONUS: Original framed B&W picture of Evans in full driver swing - in classic cap and knickers. 13.5" x 10.5" (in 14.5" x 11.5" period silver gray frame) "Harold A Parker, Pasadena California" label on reverse (circa 1921). Two preservations of an American golfing great. Chick Evans (1890-1979) was a caddie who went on to become one of the stars of his era as an amateur golfer. Evans won the U.S. Amateur once and the U.S. Open in 1916. His writing style is very good and he has an interesting early historical perspective on the game. Sixty-five illustrations selected from the author's collection of photographs. Chick Evans was a star amateur golfer of the 1910s and 1920s, after being introduced to the game as a caddie at the age of eight in Chicago. He is known for being the first person to win the U. S. Open and the U. S. Amateur in the same year. Chapters include "Boyhood Days," "About Caddies," "In Fast Company at Sixteen," "Winning the Double Crown," "Shots and How to Use Them," "Clubs and How to Use Them," among others. This copy with Erle Stanley Gardner's ownership signature and date '4/3/24' at front endpaper. Gardner was an avid sportsman and this book dates back to when he was still just a lawyer and not the famous mystery author. A scarce book to be found in original illustrated jacket and with a great provenance to boot. Near Fine in Good only dustjacket lacking top quarter of rear panel.
