NOTE THAT SINCE THE BOOK WEIGHS TWO POUNDS, THERE MAY BE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING CHARGES IF YOU REQUIRE PRIORITY MAIL OR LIVE OUTSIDE THE U.S. "Absorbingly described here are the myriad facets of an Indian culture, a culture presented throughout its long history, from the tales of its origin in the mythological past to its present way of life and factors which have produced it. Cochiti, an Indian pueblo on the Rio Grande some thirty miles southwest of Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a village of three or four hundred inhabitants. Today it is located on the same site that it occupied centuries before Coronado arrived in the vicinity. The intervening years have brought many changes, but the mainstream of Cochiti life has been relatively little diverted from its ancient course. The author lived among the people of Cochiti long enough to know by sight and name nearly all of its inhabitants. Carefully and objectively he observed many aspects of their daily life?occupations, customs, government, amusements, religion, superstitions, food, clothing, and homes. Exemplifying the co-operation which Dr. Lange received, several members of the Ka'tsina Cult ultimately volunteered information about their esoteric religious ceremonies so that the facts might be accurately and permanently recorded for future Cochiti generations. With all this is interwoven an account of the impact of Anglo-American culture on Cochiti's traditional patterns. An improved economic status, to which much impetus was given by the more enlightened policies of the United States Indian Service in the 1930's, has invariably been achieved at the expense of tribal customs. Other acculturation factors have been the cumulative effect of the presence of Spanish-American residents within the confines of the pueblo and the visits of tourists and anthropologists. But as these forces have hastened acculturation, they have also reinforced the Indian's awareness of his own culture and his pride in it. This lively book depends largely on original material, although considerable historical and ethnographic data from earlier accounts have been included to give greater time perspective and comparative value to the wealth of fresh information. Among the appendices are collections of hunting stories, tales of witchcraft, songs and choreographies, and a study of the language, the last two contributed by Dr. Gertrude P. Kurath and by J. R. Fox, respectively. Dr. Lange, a native of Janesville, Vjisconsin, studied at the University of Wisconsin, then earned three degrees?Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy?from the University of New Mexico.".
