Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Book designed by Merle Armitage. Hardcover with dust jacket. Flat black cloth over boards with printed yellow lettering on cover and spine. Cloth is nice, clean with good corners. Small dimple on back cover. Appears to be production flaw. Both front and rear hinges show beginnings of wear & separation but are still solid. Jacket is stylized yellow, black and red. A list of other Armitage books appears on rear. Jacket is mylar covered but evidence of edgewear is visible. A small section of paper is missing at the bottom of the spine. There is a small circle stain on the upper portion. Jacket folds also show wear. This is a unique book, a marriage of style and substance. The early pages draw one in with their flair, including a gorgeous woodblock print by Frasconi. The contents are a mix of essays and visuals which include artwork and photographs. They are listed consecutively by contributor, unlike other books that list visual content separately. The recognizable names are impressive: Cocteau, Satie, Cady Wells, Edward Weston, Pablo Picasso, Aaron Copeland and several others. t makes for a stimulating flow through the material. Even the chapter headings catch the eye. There is a discography and a list of Stravinsky's works in the rear portion of the book. Not a common book. Certainly one worth owning.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Printed in the USA. A Merle Armitage Book Distributed by Duell, Sloan & Pearce. List of Works, Acknowledgments, Discography, Colophon; 245 pages. The original black cloth is in excellent shape, with sharp corners and the merest hint of rubbing to the edges; the striking yellow lettering on the spine and upper board is about as bright as when first issued. The interior's heavy-quality paper remains bright, crisp, and clean, with decorated endpapers; top-edge is colored red to match the red lettering and decoration on the electric-yellow dust jacket. [Please see multiple images of this book.] The unclipped dust jacket has several small spots on the sunned spine with a few tiny chips at the edges; all text remains clear. From Edwin Corle s Note to the Reader: "This book contains five of the critiques from the 1936 volume, as it seemed to Mr. Armitage and me that these five approaches [consistently sound, albeit technically different] should not be allowed to disappear into the limbo of the out-of-print. These are by Eugene Goossens, Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie, Henry Boys, and Boris de Schloezer, The article by Schloezer is a translation by Ezra Pound." In addition there are contributions by Sitwell, Nabokoff, Copeland, reproductions of contemporary painters: Picasso, Wells, Klee, Dyer; also portraits by Cowles, Chagall, Picasso, Napolitano, Weston, and others. "This present volume contains fifteen critiques ranging from the casual through the technical to the intimate and the personal. Posterity may one day call Stravinsky the world s greatest composer." As with every book from my father's collection, tipped in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly---domestic sales sent with 'delivery confirmation' tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.

Second Edition. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper in 1949 to composer Arthur Berger: "For Arthur Berger / with the gratitude of / Merle Armitage / 1949." Berger and Armitage were not only contemporaries in the New York arts scene of the 1940s, they had a strong connection in a composer that had just preceded them, Igor Stravinsky. The work of both men-Armitage's work as an impresario and Berger's compositions-strongly reflected his influence, and both wrote essays on him, captured in the noted collection of essays on Stravinsky edited by Edwin Corle and published in 1949, the same year the book offered here was inscribed. Jacket is moderately faded at the spine panel and folds, but has no chips or tears. A survey of dance profusely illustrated with photographs and works of art from diverse cultures and periods throughout. Yellow pictorial endpapers by Picasso. A tremendous association. Near Fine in a Very Good plus dust jacket.
