Seller: Saucony Book Shop, Kutztown, PA, U.S.A.
First Edition
Original Wraps. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Almost complete run of the pioneering journal The Pennsylvania German, uniformly bound in decorated wraps, variously paginated, 107 of 110 issues, lacking 2.3, 3.2, and 7.8 for completion. All issues complete and intact except for the following: 7.2 (lacks front cover), 10.2 (replacement covers), 10.6 (lacking both covers). Most issues show modest handling/shelf wear, with the inevitable spine chipping typical of this issue, a few other issues with loose or detached (but present) covers; condition ranges Fair (on issues just noted) to Near Fine, most at least VG, many VG+ to Near Fine. Vols. I-VI issued quarterly (4/year), Vol. VIII in 8 issues, Vols. VIII-XII issued monthly (12/year), Vol. XIII w/ 12 issues in 10, Vols. XIV, XV each in 3 issues, thus 110 issues total. (Vols. XIII-XV otherwise numbered as New Series, Vols. I-III.) Early issues royal 8vo, later issues 4to. Initiated in Jan. 1900 by Rev. Croll, The Pennsylvania-German was taken over by H. W. Kriebel and issued in a slightly taller format commencing with Vol. VII in 1906, changing format again beginning with Vol. XIII (New Series, Vol. I). Meant to capitalize upon the wide-ranging interest in the Pennsylvania German Society annual volumes begun in 1893, The Pennsylvania-German initiated a new era in ethnic identity and offered a variety of both entertaining and scholarly articles focusing on various aspects of PA German folklife. Scarce in any form, rarely offered complete. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book.
