Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Cloth-backed paper over boards, with b/w photo-illustration in gilt-stamped frame on upper board. Inscribed (the hand appears to be Sutherland's) on the FFEP: "To Our Philippe -- Douglas Fairbanks -- with the hope his years beyond his twenty-first may be as brave as were Philippe's. and with our affectionate good will," and signed by both authors. An interesting association copy from the library of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., with his bookplate on the front paste-down. Dix was one of the silent era's legendary screenwriters, mainly associated with Famous Players-Lasky (Paramount). She also wrote novels, plays, and children's books. Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. (1909-2000), was an American actor (with more than 50 films to his credit, including the starring role in "Gunga Din") and a highly decorated naval officer of World War II. This item, likely, originally belonged to his father, Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. (1883-1939) who, along with Mary Pickford, was "Hollywood royalty" of its Golden Era. Both were prolific and powerful actors and producers, who co-owned Pickford-Fairbanks Studio and, along with Charles Chaplin and D. W. Griffith, co-founded United Artists. Their deep-rooted Hollywood family is connected to numerous giants of the entertainment industry.
