Soundwork was a contemporary music organization founded in 1975 by David Mahler that was a satellite of the alternative gallery and/or in Oddfellows Hall on Seattle's Capitol Hill, both supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. "Soundwork is a composer-oriented organization in Seattle. Soundwork is this publication - a reflection of some of the varied compositional activity in the Seattle area." This publication appears to be its first. The pieces range from traditional piano scores (Martin's "Un Jour,") to elaborate diagrams (Winkler's "Microtonal Design for a Sonic Pyramid,") performance instructions (Dewar & Knapp's "Drone Piece,") a performance review (Mahler's report on Phill Niblock at and/or,) building unique musical instruments (Hamilton-Nunnally,) and an appreciation of gospel-preacher radio (Woog.) The graphic presentation of each piece appears to have been produced by the artist, some with hand lettering and drawings, then professionally offset-printed for this collection. Several of these artists performed at Soundwork Hall.

Print; extracted from Beyer's Album of Virginia, an oblong folio, 16 /3/4 x 24 1/4". One of forty tinted lithographic plates, as well as title leaf. The lithography was in fact done on the continent, by Rau & Son in Dresden.~~The German-born artist Edward Beyer was active in the United States from 1848 to 1857 and is remembered primarily for this Album of Virginia. This View from the Peak of Otter depicts several men, one with a telescope, taking in the view.~~Most of the scenes in Beyer's Album are from the Valley of Virginia, and depict the soft contours of the mountains of Virginia. All of them have a soft, luminous quality, with great appeal. "This collection of forty-one views is one of the most pleasant of American color-plate books to behold" [McGrath, 88]. ~~This plate has some toning; it has faded, and is framed with mat. (Sabin 5135; Howes B,413; Bennett 10; McGrath, American Color Plate Books 1800-1900).

Tinted lithograph, 'Taken from Nature by Ed. Beyer', printed by W. Loeillot in Berlin. An exemplary print from one of the greatest American view books: "a major outstanding item" (Bennett). Edward Beyer was a German artist who visited the United States in the early 1850s. He chose to concentrate his work on Virginia and Kentucky, spending three years in Virginia working on the original drawings for this book. Although the title notes that the copyright was registered by Beyer in the District of Virginia, the book was actually produced in Germany, with the plates being prepared in Dresden or Berlin. The superb tinted lithograph views were generally printed in black with, generally, two further colours. 'This Watering Place is located in Montgomery County, on the Eastern slope of the Alleghanies, near their summit, in the Southwestern part of the State. It has been built up within the last two years, and promises to be the most agreeable place in the mountains. It is of easy access, on a branch road running from the Virginia and Tennessee Road to the Springs, eight miles from Alleghany Springs, and five miles from the Yellow Sulphur Springs' (Description of the Album of Virginia. Illustrated Richmond, 1857). Deak writes of Beyer, "He was taken by the beauty of the Virginia landscape, particularly by the elegant settings of some of the region's watering places.Virginians responded warmly to Beyer's enterprise and often gave him advance access to architectural plans when these could be of help to him. There was probably no Virginia county that Beyer left unvisited in his zeal to present what is, in fact, an affectionate family album of an entire state." Deak praises Beyer's "delicate and precise style" and "characteristic refinement of proportion.". Cf. Bennett p.10; cf. Deak Picturing America 721; cf. Howes B413 ("b"); cf. Sabin 5125.

It derives its name from Bernard Weyer, who discovered it in 1804, while hunting. With one exception, in extent, it is the largest Cave in the World. The Artist has selected the Tapestry and Drum Room for an Illustration, and which is perhaps the greatest of its Wonders. It gives forth, when struck on its walls, the deep sonourous sound of a bass drum. "the influence of 2,000 to 3,000 lights in these immense caverns is only such as to reveal the objects, without disturbing the solemn and sublime obscurity which sleeps in everything. Scarcely any scenes can awaken so many passions at once , and so deeply. I have had before, from other objects, one simple impression made with greater power; but I never had so many impressions made, and with so much power, before".' Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Oblong folio (16 4/8 x 24 4/8 inches). Spotted colour tinted lithographic vignette title-page and 40 SPOTTED and dampstained colour tinted lithographic plates after Beyer by Rau & Son and A. v. W. Loeillot (each plate laid down on heavier stock). Original half black morocco, black cloth decorated in gilt and blind (rebacked, endpapers renewed, scuffed). First edition, of this album of lithographic views of Virginia by a German artist resident from 1854-1856. Beyer, a graduate of Dusseldorf Academy of Art, first traveled to America in 1848, at first settling in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He visited Virginia in 1854 and stayed until about 1856 or 1857 sketching and painting a number of scenes that would appear in the present work, after the publication of which he returned to Germany. The scenes depicted in the album include: the Natural Bridge in Rockbridge County, Harper's Ferry, Kanawha Fall, Old Point Comfort, James River Canal; spelunking scenes in Weyer's Cave; and resorts and natural springs such as Stribling Springs, White Sulphur Spring, Hot Springs. It is conceivable that one of the reasons, beyond their obvious beauty, that Beyer depicted so many natural springs and resorts is because of his wife's ailing health. The title-page vignettes include Monticello and Mount Vernon. Howes mentions an 1836 issue although this is likely a ghost as no copies are located by him or more recent bibliographers. An octavo volume with descriptions for the plates was issued, but rarely accompanies this volume. Howes B413; Sabin 5125. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
