Original printed and decorated boards, rebacked, new endpapers; boards worn and rubbed with minor tears, some leaves toned due to paper stock, but generally a good copy. First edition. This is the account of the 1867-1868 Pacific voyage by a Swedish officer on the HMS Zealous, which sailed up the coast of South America to Canada, with a side visit to the Hawaiian islands. Fascinating details of travel in Patagonia, Chile and Peru in South America, California, Pacific islands in Hawaii and Tahiti, and up to British Columbia are provided, though in Swedish. The plates, from photographs taken on the journey, illustrate Hawaii as well as the royal family, including Kamehameha IV and V, and the Tahitian monarch Queen Pomare. A significant work for the Pacific voyages enthusiast.

Most of text browned, a few stains, two leaves with marginal repair not affecting text. Good. This Swedish account of a voyage up the Pacific coast of America and especially to the Hawaiian Islands is not in Hill, as it is a little late, taking place in 1867-68. There is a long account of a visit to Hawaii, and many of the handsome plates illustrate the island and the royal family. "A little-known account of a Pacific voyage by a young Swedish lieutenant on board two British naval ships, Zealous and the Alert. In ten chapters the author narrates his voyage on the Zealous around Cape Horn, up the coast of South America, to San Francisco. From San Francisco, Ekelof continued to Vancouver. At both ports he had shore leave and investigated the surrounding area.The attractive lithograph plates include portraits of Kings Kamehameha IV and V, Dowager Queen Emma, a view of Waikiki showing Diamond Head through a grove of palm trees, and a portrait of a young Hawaiian woman. The views include an interesting depiction of Vancouver 'Esquimalt' and five plates of Tahitian scenes and natives" - Forbes. Not in Lowther or Cowan, despite the Canada and California content. Old dampstains to top page end, barely affecting head margins. Clean, unmarked pages. Nordenskiold was an explorer and scientist in his own right. (He completed the first successful navigation of the Northeast Passage on the Vega, 1879-1880.) This, his most substantial monograph on the history of early cartography, was systematic and influential. His personal collection of early maps was given to the University of Helsinki, and has been inscribed on UNESCO's memory of the World Register. This is an oversized or heavy book, that requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US.
