Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Doubleday, Doran and Co., 1940. Copyright, 1940. Stated first edition. Probably earlier than the British edition. This copy in overall good + or very good condition. Ex-library (State University of Iowa), but no external markings, maybe because dust jacket lacking. Bookplate of Hillcrest Library of the State Univ. of Iowa on front paste-down, perforated library markings on title page. Due-date slip on back free endpaper (about 8 charges stamped on slip). Text is clean and free of marks and stains. One dog-eared page. Binding firm and solid except that back hinge is cracked--not loose. Corners of covers a little rubbed, as are the head and tail of the spine (backstrip). Just minor shelfwear. All in all, a good, sound copy. WWI espionage. Please phone or email to negotiate price if you think I've overpriced an ex-lib. copy.

"This is the story of how 300,000 loyal Czechs, residing in America during the trying days of neutrality form 1914 to 1917, banded themselves together to checkmate the work of German espionage agents in this country. They protected factories, guarded American shipping, kept a close watch on the activities of German societies and institutions. Attempts at sabotage were nipped in the bud, and in that way heavy loss of life was avoided. The master spies of the Central Powers were exposed and the Zimmermann plot to bring Mexico into conflict with the United States was brought to light through the work of this tireless and unique organization. They worked with the British Intelligence Service on many occasions, but preserved their own organization until the entry of the U.S. into the war removed the need for it. Behind all this volunteer work was the hope that independence for the long-suppressed Czechoslovakian provinces of Austria would come out of the World War: a dream that was realized only to be shattered again in 1939. At the center of the web, directing every phase of the work, was Emmanuel Victor Voska. The only man who knew the whole story, he has set down in this fascinating book his recollections of those epic days." - from dust-jacket blurb.
