Also referee of the fight with the first million dollar gate, Dempsey and Carpentier in 1921. A lovely conversational style takes the reader from fights with Jack Johnson through to Gene Tunney. 1st edition. 8vo. 288pp. plus 16 page soft black and white photos. Internally very good, very mild foxing throughout. Publisher's compliments stamp to title page. In the original black cloth boards, gilt titles to spine which has some wear to head and tail, corners a little bumped else a very good copy of this scarce title.

The scarce first edition of this memoir of Eugene Corri, a man who spent forty-five years as a boxing referee, and who in 1907 was supposedly the first person to officiate from within the ring.Corri even appeared as himself in Alfred Hitchcock's 1927 silent movie, 'The Ring'.Corri's conversational tone leads the reader through some of the 2,000 fights he refereed, including Mickey Walker against Tommy Milligan in 1927.Illustrated with sixteen photographic plates. Collated, complete.This work belonged to the library of Philip Brocklehurst, bearing his armorial bookplate to the front pastedown, and a dedication to him to the front free endpaper. Brocklehurst is best known for being a member of the Nimrod Expedition in Antarctica of 1907 1909, led by Ernest Shackleton. A boxer himself, he represented Cambridge University at boxing in 1905, 1906 and 1907 as a lightweight against Oxford University, and obtained a half blue. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to spine head and tail. Contemporary owner's armorial bookplate to front pastedown, and inscription to front free endpaper. Some spots to fore edge of text block. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd spot. Very Good. book.
