Based on extensive archival research, Three Duties and Talleyrand's Dictum paints a vivid picture of one man's involvement in successive Australian government responses to international events stretching from Appeasement to the end of the Vietnam conflict. Includes notes, bibliography, plus index. "Born into colonial wealth and privilege, Sir Keith Officer (1889-1969) was the archetypal Anglo-Australian. A very good historical biography - a window on to lost and exotic worlds and an exploration of a strangely familiar old Australia." Printed in Australia. Card covers, trade pbk size, 228pp, b&w photos. Light wear to card edges and corners; a very good copy. Edwin Llewellyn and Terence John Charles were twins, but their personalities could not have been more different. So begins this sweeping true story of a fractured but close-knit Australian family during WWII, focusing on the service of the twins and life on the home front as experienced primarily by their elder sister and mother. When hostilities were declared, Terry joined the Australian Military Forces and was quickly promoted. However, as a militiaman, he was banned from serving overseas. Having watched Edwin join the glamorous RAAF and become a fighter pilot, Terry resigned his commission to follow his twin. Failing to win his wings, Terry became a navigator in heavy bombers in the closing stages of the European war.Their story took them to Canberra, Africa, England, Scotland, the United States, the Subcontinent and Ceylon between 1939 and the end of 1945. Little-known aspects of wartime experience are explored, including the so-called wet canteens debate, the international negotiations over the release of interned Allied and Japanese diplomats, and the life of the Raj on the north-west frontier and in India and Ceylon.

Card covers, 159pp, b&w plates. Light wear to card edges; a near fine copy. In 1936 at the age of sixteen Edwin Charles (then in Sydney) was recruited to the Commonwealth Public Service in Canberra. This book records his letters from Canberra to his mother in Murwillumbah, As a snapshot of Canberra in transition from country town to fledling city in the uncertain years between the Depression and World War II, they represent authentic social history. The perspective from which the image is captured - that of an ambitious youth with an eye for detail and an engaging turn of phrase - makes this book a unique contribution to cultural heritage.
