Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 8vo (198 x 120mm). [18] pp. Late-19th-century half calf and marbled paper over boards, spine gilt lettered, monogram: ìE.M.î at foot of spine, decorative endpapers; (title stained at upper margin, light occasional spots; lightly rubbed). This copy bound for well-known Goethe collector Ernst Magnus, his pictorial bookplate on front pastedown. Goethe was born on August 28th, 1749 in Frankfurt. This publication was part of a series dedicated to Goethe and published songs and various memorials dedicated to him on his birthday. Early copies date from 1819 and the publishing tradition seems to continue into the 1920ís. This 1830 copy is imprinted with Goetheís birthday and appears 81 years after his death. The city of Weimar, where Goethe was chief minister and held many town directorships, still continues the traditional celebration of Goetheís birthday, but in the form of a wine festival.
