Lxvi + 587pp. With portrait, two maps and 30 illustrations by General Gordon. Black endpapers. Cover scuffed and grubby, with a few small tears. Contains an original letter on black-edged paper from General Gordon's sister, M A Gordon, to a Mr Goss dated November 11, 1885: "You are indeed very kind in sending me a second bust of my dear brother, General Gordon, which has reached me here in safety - I am extremely obliged to you for this most interesting memento of one so very dear to me. There can be no doubt of who it is a model of, though from being so much with him and knowing every feature better than anyone else I do not perhaps see it so like as others do, even my sisters. Your generosity enables me to give one bust to a cousin who will I know value it immensely. You will accept my sincere thanks and believe me to remain yours truly and obliged, M A Gordon. I do not think I sent you a copy of my brother's last words, which I now enclose hoping you may care to keep them. I have not said how much I admire your bust, it is so beautifully executed".
