Includes Praise for The PRince of Los Cocuyos; List of Other Books by Richard Blanco; Author Dedication; Acknowledgments; Author's Note and About the Author. Winner of the 2015 Lambda Literary Award. "Richard Blanco's prismatic and lyrical momoir of growing up in a family of Cuban exiles in Miami during the 1970s and '80s, The Prince of Los Cocuyos, is a rich account of how Blanco, the first Latino and openly gay inaugural poet of the United States, came to understand his place in America while grappling with his burgeoning cultural, artistic, and sexual identities." -- from the rear outer cover. "[The book] includes portraits and scenes, intimately and lovingly rendered . Having honored our nation as a whole in verse, [Blanco] honors it again, but this time as witness to the life and fortune of one exceptionally American family." -- Los Angeles Review of Books. "In this vibrant memoir, Obama-inaugural poet Richard Blanco tenderly, exhilaratingly chronicles his Miami childhood amid a colorful, if suffocating, family of Cuban exiles, as well as his quest to find his artistic voice and the courage to accept himself as a gay man." -- O, The Oprah Magazine. "[The books] is equal parts touching, heartache inducing, and laugh out loud funny." - Daily Beast.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. In The Black List, twenty-five prominent African-Americans of various professions, disciplines, and backgrounds offer their own stories and insights on the struggles, triumphs, and joys of black life in America and, in the process, redefine "black list" for a new century. As seen in original portraits by renowned photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and in a series of incisive interviews conducted by award-winning journalist, critic, academic, and radio host Elvis Mitchell, this group exemplifies today's most accomplished, determined African-Americans, whose lives and careers form a trail of inspiration and example for people of all races. Spanning the arts, sports, politics, and business, the diverse accomplishments and lives of these remarkable individuals create a kaleidoscope of ideas and experiences, and provide the framework for a singular conversation about the influence of African-Americans on this country and on our world. Black cloth with silver spine lettering. Remainder mark on top of textblock. Illustrated. vii, 198pp. Solid copy. Full refund if not satisfied.

Illustrated Endpapers. Illustrations. Guide to Personalities. Time Lines. Notes. Index. DJ has some wear and soiling. Madeleine Jana Korbel Albright (born Marie Jana Korbelova; May 15, 1937) is an American politician and diplomat. She is the first woman to have become the United States Secretary of State. She was nominated by U.S. President Bill Clinton on December 5, 1996, and was unanimously confirmed by a U.S. Senate vote of 99 0. She was sworn in on January 23, 1997. Albright currently serves as a professor of International Relations at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. She holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University. In May 2012, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by U.S. President Obama. Secretary Albright also serves on the board of the Council on Foreign Relations. Albright is fluent in English, French, Russian, and Czech. Derived from a Kirkus review: The former U.S. secretary of state blends World War II-era history and memoir in her account of her discovery, at age 59, that she had lost more than two-dozen relatives in the Holocaust. Albright's parents had never told her of her Jewish heritage, and in January 1997 she had only recently learned of it when a Washington Post reporter broke the larger story. She spent the ensuing years researching her family's history. She was aided in her endeavors by family material she found stored in boxes in her garage-and by a small research team. The initial sections are principally a summary of history of the region and the rise of Hitler and the Nazis. Occasionally, she slips into the first person to talk about the activities of her father, a career diplomat, and her mother, a diplomat's wife. The most gripping parts are her personal stories. Albright sometimes focuses more on politics and the war than on the remembrance. The personal passages increase in number and detail as she grows older. The later sections, about the postwar politics in Czechoslovakia, are engaging--especially the communists' moves to subvert the fledgling democracy. First edition [stated]. Third printing [stated].
