First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Limited Edition. Folio. Pp. 28, [13 plates]. Frontis. Guillou drawing. Illustrated with an additional twelve black & white halftone reproductions of pencil drawings and one inked chart. Biographical sketch by Emily Blackmore, commentary on the plates by Elliot A. P. Evans. Natural linen, titles stamped in gilt on the spine, pencil illustration "Small Boats of the Peacock" printed on the cover. Edition limited to 450. Moderate age toning to cover and leaf edges. To say that surgeon Guillou served under Wilkes on the United States Exploring Expedition is a slight understatement. As surgeon, Guillou tended to crew members who had been subject to Wilkes' frequent and severe floggings. The Wilkes-Guillou relationship became so fraught that Guillou was placed under arrest during the tour. Following the Expedition's return, Guillou filed seven charges against Wilkes, revealing Wilkes' deep failings as leader of the USEE. A handsome BCC book production, consistent with the their 1960s tendency toward large-format volumes, presented here in fresh copy. .

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Illustrated cloth. 450 copies printed by Lawton Kennedy. Illustrations; includes map of the track of the U. S. line-of-battle ship Columbus in the years 1845-1848. The author was a surgeon in the United States Navy and completed many drawings of what he observed during his Navy tours. As the title indicates, the drawings in this book are of points of interest in Oregon and California with descriptions of the locations. He was court martialed in 1842 for an "error of opinion", but because he was a man of high honor and integrity the President reduced the punishment to suspension without pay or emolument, for twelve months. After completing his one-year punishment he was assigned to the Columbus which sailed to China where a trade agreement was to be ratified and another one attempted with Japan; this tour ended in March, 1848. The Columbus "had been away 1002 days and had sailed completely around the world, her course measuring 69,485 miles".
