Westerman, the Director and Founder of the Zoological Garden of Amsterdam, commissioned Heinrich Leutemann to begin a work on a monograph that showcased the cranes residing at the zoo. Keulemans, as well as text written by F.E. Blaauw. Each beautifully hand colored image is accompanied by both the English and Latin name, as well as other common names for the bird, a full description of plumage at both immature and adult stages, and a discussion of habits.
