Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 8vo. Pp. 269. Preface by Roy W. Howard, president of Scripps-Howard Newspapers. Front edge untrimmed. Top edge stained dark grey, slightly dust-soiled. Full red cloth with gilt lettering (a tad dulled) on spine and Tong's chop, in gilt, stamped on front cover. Inscribed on front free endpaper by the author: "General Maxwell D. Taylor / With Warm Regards / Hollington K. Tong / Tokyo, May 14, 1955" An effort by Tong to correct the record by refuting commonly held assumptions surrounding the failures of Chiang Kai Shek and his Nationalist government. Among them,Tong states the corrective that Chiang's head of secret police, General Tai Li (Dai Li) was not sympathetic to the Japanese invaders and that Li did not wage covert efforts to subvert foreign correspondents in China. The very act of refuting such claims carries the opposite effect by reinforcing an assumption, accurate or not, that may have been lost to history. Regardless, Tong's battle was sysyphean, being unable to placate the Chiang and Madame Chiang on one side, and on the other, incapable of convincing foreign correspondents of the merit in the Nationalist's cause. A rich association copy connecting two major WWII figures, the book was inscribed the year Taylor was promoted to Army Chief of Staff. Bookseller inventory E061955F.
