Book
Cloth. Condition: Very Good. 2 blue cloth bound volumes with gilt lettering, a complete set of this Confederate imprint. Written by Jamison, a lawyer and plantation owner, and president of the South Carolina secession convention. As Jamison explains in the preface, he sent his manuscript on a blockade runner to be printed in London. Very few copies of the book made it back to the Confederacy. Based on the bookplate, this book was captured by Union naval forces Oct 1864 from the blockade runner "Hope". Some how the book was transmitted to a prominent Yankee family, a Margaret Bowditch Howell owned this book, her father in law fought w/ the 54th and 55th Massachusetts and was wounded at Charleston Harbor, her uncle Charles Pickering Bowditch fought with the 55th Mass and was later an archaeologist/financier. Margaret's grandfather was an overseer at Harvard and publisher of Bowditch's Practical Navigator (his bookplate is above her bookplate), originally compiled by his father and her great-grandfather.
First Edition
JAMISON, D[avid] F. The Life and Times of Bertrand du Guesclin: A History of the Fourteenth Century. 2 Vols. Charleston: John Russell, 1864. 1st ed. xvi,287; viii,314pp. Portrait frontis. Orig. decorated cloth. Feet of spines beginning to show wear, corner of Vol. One bumped, else a near fine set. P & W 5519. One of the most interesting works produced in the Confederacy. Jamison, who served as president of the South Carolina Secession Convention, began this work in the mid-1850s and was not able to complete it until 1863. He sent the manuscript via a blockade runner to London, hoping it could be produced in a more handsome manner than could be done in the Confederacy. A year later the work returned through the blockade bearing the imprint of John Russell of Charleston.
