A graduate of the University of Virginia before the war, Johnson served as chaplain to the 17th Virginia Infantry from first Manassas through Seven Days in 1862, was wounded, and spent the final three years of the war in Lynchburg, ministering to several churches, including an African-American one; his post-war life was spent primarily at various educational institutions in Mississippi. Inscribed by the editor to Frank Klingberg, a fellow historian at the University of North Carolina. Very good. Blue-stamped gray cloth decorated dust jacket (some wear around the edges, some soiling). (10102).

Persons, who served in both World Wars. Presentation inscription on front endpaper, "Dear General--I thought you might enjoy reading parts of this. I'm sure you understand the motive behind the publication. Sincerely, Crawford [Toy Johnson, Jr.]. John Lipscomb Johnson was a Baptist minister who served as a Confederate chaplain. Wounded in July 1861, he became chaplain of an army hospital. After the war he became an English professor at the University of Mississippi.

Original text block complete and in very good condition. Title page and copyright page both dated 1871. 765 pages. Illustrated with several black and white engravings, with tissue paper guards. Several of the plates have water damage on the bottom edges (a brownish creep). Strangely, there is no sign of any water damage at all to any of the pages other than the plates.
