Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, 476 pgs, index, frontis portrait and with other illustrations and portraits. Original blue cloth with gilt titled spine. With clear, mylar wrapper. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Covers spotted and speckled, small chip on upper edge, spine spotted and stained. Interior pages 93-114 are damaged with no loss of text; else pages are clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: At the outset of the Civil War, DuBose volunteered as a private and quickly advanced within the ranks to cavalry officer. DuBose was attached to Russell's 4th Alabama Cavalry. Less than a year in the field he was discharged by a surgeon's certificate, but remained part of the army's non-commissioned staff. He later described his functions as "recruiting and labor impressment". After the war he became a writer and editor, contributing well-received works on politics and biography, including this on Major-General Joe Wheeler who was Chief of Cavalry for the Army of the Tennessee. REFERENCES: KRICK 120 "As is the case with several other Neale titles of the same sort, this book is partly biographical and partly devoted to unit and campaign narrative history. DuBose never swerves from the Wheeler thread in weaving the story of the campaigns in which that officer participated. In addition to official correspondence reproduced in the text, several letters of junior officers and men reflect nuances of the story. Approximately one-half of the volume deals with the 1864 campaigns. DuBose joined the majority of his contemporaries in writing of Braxton Bragg from a critical viewpoint.".
